# What is social media marketing?

> **TL;DR:** Social media marketing is showing up where your customers already scroll, often enough that they remember you when they need you. Pick one platform, post for the people who’d actually buy, and count messages and orders, not followers.

Fatima opened a small cloud kitchen and was told to “be on every platform”. Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, X, Threads. Three weeks later she was posting the same blurry biryani photo to six apps at midnight and getting four likes, two from her cousins.

Then she stopped. She picked Instagram and WhatsApp, posted one short video a day of food actually being cooked, and replied to every message within an hour. Two months later, half her orders came through Instagram DMs.

Fewer platforms. More orders.

## In normal-people words

Social media marketing means **posting where your customers already spend time, so they know you, like you and remember you when they’re hungry, bored or need help.**

It’s not about going viral. It’s about being familiar to the few hundred people nearby who might actually buy.

## The chai stall version

The chai-wallah at the corner doesn’t advertise. But he waves at every regular, remembers who takes less sugar, and chats about cricket. When you want chai, you don’t compare options. You go to your guy.

**Social media is waving at your regulars, a few hundred at a time.**

## Pick one platform first

**Where your customers probably are**

| Platform | Good for | Best format |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Instagram | Food, fashion, beauty, decor, anything visual | Short videos (Reels), photo carousels |
| WhatsApp | Repeat customers, orders, local services | Status updates, catalog, direct chats |
| Facebook | Older customers, local groups, events | Posts in local groups, events |
| YouTube | How-tos, reviews, anything people want explained | Longer videos, Shorts |
| LinkedIn | Selling to businesses, hiring | Text posts from a real person |

## What Instagram actually rewards

Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, said in early 2025 that the three biggest signals are **watch time**, **likes per reach** and **sends per reach**, meaning how often people share your post in DMs ([Social Media Today](https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/instagram-shares-algorithm-insights-2025/738034/)). Likes matter a bit more with your followers; sends matter more with new people.

**Turn those signals into posts**

- **If** Watch time **→ then** Get to the point in the first second. Show the biryani, not your logo.
- **If** Sends (shares in DMs) **→ then** Post things people want to send a friend: “Tag the one who always orders extra raita.”
- **If** Likes per reach **→ then** Post less, but better. Five so-so posts dilute one good one.

Instagram is also testing opening the app straight into Reels, and labelling AI-generated profiles ([SocialBee](https://socialbee.com/blog/instagram-updates)). Translation: short real videos are getting more important, not less.

> **The DumbCMO:** You don’t need a studio. A phone, a window and your actual work is plenty.

## What to measure (and what to ignore)

**What a follower is worth vs what a message is worth**

| | Value |
| --- | --- |
| A like | 1 |
| A follow | 2 |
| A share | 4 |
| A DM asking the price | 8 |
| An order | 10 |

*A rough way to think about it, not data: how close each one is to paying you, scored 1 to 10.*

**Count messages and orders. Followers are a vanity metric (A number that feels good but doesn’t pay rent.).** Read more in [followers don’t pay rent](/scam-watch#buy-followers).

## Do this today

- [ ] Ask your last five customers which app they use most. Pick that one.
- [ ] Film one 15-second video of your work in progress. No talking needed.
- [ ] Put your WhatsApp number or order link in your bio.
- [ ] Reply to every comment and message from the last week.

## Not-so-frequently asked questions

### How often should I post?

As often as you can keep up for months. Three good posts a week beats seven rushed ones for two weeks and then silence.

### Do I need to dance on Reels?

No. Show your hands making the thing. People love watching work.

### Should I buy followers to look established?

No. Bought followers never buy, and they make your real posts reach fewer people. See [Scam Watch](/scam-watch#buy-followers).

### Organic or paid?

Start organic to learn what people like. Then put a little money behind the posts that already work. See [what are paid ads?](/blog/what-are-paid-ads)

## Things your agency won’t say

- Being on six platforms badly is worse than being on one well.
- The “best time to post” matters far less than posting something worth watching.
- Replying to DMs fast is the most underrated social media strategy there is.

## Jargon Jail

**Locked up: “Engagement rate”**

Likes, comments, shares and saves, divided by how many people saw the post. **It’s how many people did something, out of everyone who saw it.** Useful for comparing your own posts. Useless for comparing yourself with a celebrity.

Most of it is invite-only, with no YouTube-style ad share yet. Steal the clip-to-long habit; don’t rebuild your week around a beta.
