# This week in Google: report dates, answer-first pages, and AI Mode ads in India

> **TL;DR:** Three things worth your time this week. Check the date on Search Console reports before you panic. Put the answer in the first lines of your pages. And expect “Sponsored” ads inside Google’s AI Mode in India, now that Google says AI Mode’s lower monetisation weighed on its search growth.

Every week there’s a pile of Google news. Most of it is for people who run giant websites.

This week, three bits are useful if you run a small business. Here they are, plain, with what to do.

## In normal-people words

## The short version

- **Search Console reports don’t all update at the same speed.** Google’s John Mueller says check the date on the report, and look at the Performance report first.
- **Pages that AI tools quote tend to answer the question straight away.** One agency’s study of almost 200,000 AI answers found that pattern.
- **Ads inside Google’s AI Mode are expanding to India** and nine other countries. Google also told investors that “lower monetization” in AI Mode weighed on its search growth.

## 1. Check the date before you panic about Search Console

Someone on Reddit’s r/TechSEO noticed their Search Console (Google’s free dashboard that shows how your site does in Google Search: clicks, searches you show up for, and which pages are indexed.) Page Indexing report hadn’t updated since 16 October. They worried something was broken.

Google’s John Mueller replied, as Search Engine Journal reported. Two lines are worth keeping:

- **“Indexing doesn’t change quickly, and when it does, you see that reflected in the performance reports first.”**
- “I don’t think it makes sense for me / us to comment on the data freshness for all reports all the time, this is why we put dates in there.”

He also said Google prioritises faster updates where it thinks they’re actually useful.

Search Engine Journal checked its own Search Console on 29 October. Its indexing report showed a last update of 22 October. So a week-old date is normal, not a fault.

> **The DumbCMO:** The report didn’t break. It just has a slower watch than you. Check the date, then go do something useful.

What to do:

- Before you read any Search Console report, look for the date it was last updated.
- For day-to-day worries, open **Performance** first. If clicks and impressions look normal, your indexing almost certainly is too.
- Only dig into the Pages report if Performance shows a real drop that lasts more than a few days.

## 2. Put the answer at the top of the page

TJ Robertson, whose agency sells SEO and AI-search services, published a study on 25 October 2026. It looked at 193,507 answers from Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and ChatGPT, collected between 27 August and 21 October 2026. The questions were 4,167 non-brand, buyer-style questions for 78 of the agency’s client businesses.

The finding that matters here: the study had AI raters score 195 pairs of pages blind, without knowing which page in each pair had been cited. Each quoted page was compared with a page that ranked in Google’s top 10 for the same question but never came up in the AI’s searches.

**Did the page open with a direct answer?**

| Comparison | Pages the AI quoted | Pages it passed over |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Quoted pages vs Google top-10 pages the AI never pulled up | 20% | 5% |
| Earlier round: quoted vs unquoted pages pulled up for the same answer | 23% | 14% |

The study also found that half the passed-over top-10 pages didn’t answer the question anywhere in the part the raters read. For quoted pages, it was 23%.

Two honest caveats. First, this is one agency’s data from its own clients, and the author says the results are associations that can’t prove any trait causes a citation. Second, look at the numbers again: **most quoted pages still didn’t open with a direct answer.** Answering first helps your odds. It isn’t a magic switch.

What to do:

- Open your five most important pages. Read only the first two lines. Do they answer the question a customer came with?
- If your page starts with “Welcome to our website” or a story about your founding, move the answer up. Keep the story further down.
- Example: a page about your tiffin service should say what you deliver, where, and from what price in the first lines. Then everything else.

## 3. Ads inside AI Mode are coming to India

On 28 October 2026, Google said it is scaling ads in AI Mode (Google’s chat-style search mode. You ask a question and get a long AI-written answer with links, instead of a list of results.) to Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. It plans Brazil, Mexico and the UK in the fourth quarter of 2026.

What Google says about these ads:

- They’re labelled **“Sponsored”**.
- AI Mode questions are, on average, three times longer than traditional searches.
- In the US, Google’s internal data shows people click sponsored and regular product listings in AI Mode at a similar rate.

Then there’s the money side. On Alphabet’s earnings call for July to September 2026, Google’s chief business officer Philipp Schindler said strong growth in AI Mode searches “had an impact because of the lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode.” He added: “To be clear, we feel very good about our trajectory here.” He called currency changes the single largest reason Search growth slowed compared with the previous quarter. As Search Engine Journal points out, he didn’t say what AI Mode monetisation was lower than, or by how much.

For scale, Google Search and other revenue was $63.35 billion that quarter, up 12% from $56.57 billion a year earlier, according to Alphabet’s results. Sundar Pichai also said one in five AI Mode searches around the world now use voice, images or documents.

## The chai stall version

The chai stall has started selling biscuits from one brand at the counter. Business is slower than at the old snack rack, so the owner is now putting more brand biscuits on more counters.

**When the house says “we earn less here, but we feel good about it”, expect more ads on that counter.**

What to do if you run Google Ads in India:

- Search three questions your customers ask in AI Mode, in full sentences. Note whether you see Sponsored results and whose.
- Keep watching cost per lead or sale in your Google Ads reports, not clicks. A new place for ads doesn’t change what a customer is worth to you.
- Be wary of anyone selling a guaranteed spot inside AI answers. Google’s announcement promises no such thing.

## Do this today

- [ ] Open Search Console. Note the last-updated date on the Pages report, then check Performance for the last 28 days.
- [ ] Read the first two lines of your five most important pages. Rewrite any that don’t answer the customer’s question.
- [ ] Ask Google’s AI Mode three questions a customer would ask. Screenshot who gets mentioned and whether ads appear.
- [ ] If you run Google Ads, write down your current cost per lead or sale so you can spot any change.

## Not-so-frequently asked questions

### My Search Console indexing numbers haven’t changed in a week. Is my site broken?

Probably not. Check the report’s last-updated date. Mueller says indexing changes show up in the Performance report first.

### Does answering first guarantee I get quoted by AI?

No. In the study, most quoted pages didn’t open with a direct answer either. It improves your odds, and it helps human readers anyway.

### When will AI Mode ads show in India?

Google said on 28 October 2026 that it is scaling them in India now, alongside nine other countries. It didn’t give a date for every advertiser or search.

### Will ads in AI Mode cost more?

Google hasn’t published prices, and Schindler gave no numbers for AI Mode monetisation. Watch your own reports.

## Things your agency won’t say

- “Your Search Console is frozen, we’ll fix it for a fee” is bullsh#t. The report has a date on it. Read the date.
- The study behind “answer first” comes from an agency that sells AI-search services. The advice is still good. Just know who’s talking.
- Putting the answer at the top of your page is free, takes ten minutes, and helps every reader, robot or not.
