# How long does SEO actually take?

> **TL;DR:** Expect three to six months before SEO brings steady visitors, and longer in busy markets. The early weeks are setup. The payoff is that it keeps working after you stop.

Priya opened a small yoga studio and paid an agency to “do SEO”. Month one: nothing. Month two: nothing. Month three: she cancelled, furious. Month five, a neighbour told her, “I found you on Google!” The work had started paying off two months after she stopped paying for it.

Priya didn’t get ripped off. She just wasn’t told how slow this is.

## In normal-people words

SEO is earning Google’s trust so it shows your pages when people search. Trust takes time for two reasons. **Google has to find and understand your pages, then it has to see that people find them useful.** Neither happens overnight.

How long depends on three things: how many other businesses are chasing the same searches, how old and trusted your site already is, and how much useful stuff you publish.

## The chai stall version

A new chai stall opens on a busy road. Day one, nobody stops. Week two, the auto drivers try it. Month two, the office crowd starts coming because the auto drivers said it’s good. Month six, there’s a queue at 4pm.

Same chai the whole time. **What changed was how many people trusted it.** SEO is the same queue, just online.

## The honest timeline

**SEO for a small local business, roughly**

1. **Week 1: Fix the basics.** Google Business Profile, clear page titles, a page for each thing you sell.
2. **Weeks 2–6: Google finds you.** Pages get indexed (Google saving a copy of your page so it can show it in results.). You show up for your own name. Not much else yet.
3. **Months 2–4: First trickle.** A few visitors from specific searches, like “yoga for back pain in Baner”.
4. **Months 4–6: It starts to add up.** More pages ranking, more reviews, steady visits every week.
5. **Month 6 onwards: Compounding.** Old pages keep bringing people in while you write new ones.

These are rough ranges, not promises. A plumber in a small town can see results in weeks. A new online shoe store competing with giants might wait a year.

> **The DumbCMO:** Anyone who gives you an exact date for “page one” is guessing. Confidently.

## Why it’s slow: the three speed limits

**What’s slowing you down**

- **If** Your site is brand new **→ then** Google hasn’t learned to trust it yet. Nothing to do but publish good pages and wait.
- **If** Big companies rank for your words **→ then** Go narrower. “Birthday cakes” is taken. “Eggless birthday cakes in Kothrud” is wide open.
- **If** You have three pages and no reviews **→ then** There’s nothing for Google to show. Write a page for each question customers ask you.

## SEO vs ads, on a clock

**How quickly each one works**

| What | SEO | Paid ads |
| --- | --- | --- |
| First visitors | Weeks to months | Same day |
| Cost per visitor | Free once it works | You pay for every click |
| When you stop | Keeps working for a while | Stops instantly |
| Best for | The long run | Testing and quick wins |

That’s why many small businesses run a few [ads](/blog/what-are-paid-ads) while SEO warms up, then lean on SEO once it’s working. Not sure if ads make sense yet? Try the [should I run ads? tool](/tools/should-i-run-ads).

## Do this today

- [ ] Write down the 10 questions customers ask you most. Each one is a future page.
- [ ] Search your business name. If it’s not the first result, start with your [Google Business Profile](/blog/google-business-profile).
- [ ] Put a reminder in your calendar for three months from today to check your Google visitors.
- [ ] Ask anyone selling you SEO: “What will you do in month one, and how will I see it?”

## Not-so-frequently asked questions

### Can I speed SEO up by paying more?

A bit, by paying for more good pages to be written. Not by paying for “faster rankings”. Google says it never accepts money to rank sites in its results.

### My agency says month one is ‘technical work’. Is that real?

Often, yes. Fixing slow pages and broken links is real. Just ask for a list of what was fixed.

### Do I have to keep doing SEO forever?

Not at full speed. Once pages rank, a few updates a month keep them fresh. It’s more like watering a plant than building a house.

### What should I measure in the first three months?

Whether Google has found your pages, and whether you appear for your own name and a few specific searches. Sales come later.

## Things your agency won’t say

- A 30-day ranking guarantee is a red flag, not a selling point.
- Most results come from boring pages that answer real questions. Not tricks.
- If you stop after three months, you probably paid for the setup and skipped the payoff.

## Jargon Jail

**Locked up: “Sandbox”**

You’ll hear “your site is in the Google sandbox”. It’s a fan theory that new sites are held back on purpose. Google has never confirmed it. **New sites are slow because they haven’t earned trust yet, not because they’re in a box.**

Should you do anything?](https://dumbcmo.com/blog/google-ranking-shake-october-24): Many rank trackers spiked on Saturday 24 October 2026, which suggests Google changed something. Google hasn't confirmed it. Wait a week, check Search Console, and change nothing in a panic.

Your clicks may keep falling. Your job is to be the business the summary mentions.
