# About DumbCMO

The marketing notes you were too embarrassed to take. DumbCMO is a free notebook that explains marketing in plain words: **SEO, ads, social media, analytics and the jargon around them**. It’s written by a cartoon ex-executive who got tired of meetings nobody understood.

SEO, ads, Instagram, all of it, in words your mom would get. Every note starts with the answer and ends with **something you can do today**.

> **The deal**
> - Free. No signup, no ~~“book a strategy call”~~, no course at the end.
> - Not an agency. He has nothing to sell you, so he can be **honest**.
> - The joke is always on jargon. Never on you.

## Who is this guy?

Fifteen years of meetings where people said ~~“let’s leverage omnichannel synergies.”~~ Nobody understood it. Including him. So he quit and started taking **honest notes** instead.

- **Calls himself dumb.** **He isn’t.** Being dumb on purpose is the hard part.
- **Allergic to buzzwords.** Hears “synergy,” reaches for the red pen.
- **Honest to a fault.** Will tell you a trendy tactic is a waste of money.
- **Explains with everyday stuff.** Chai stalls, cricket, your mom’s WhatsApp forwards.
- **Warm and a bit tired.** He’s seen every marketing fad come and go. Twice.

> **The DumbCMO:** Fifteen years of meetings and nobody could tell me what “synergy” means. Because it’s bullsh#t.

Catchphrases: “Let me dumb that down.” · “In normal-people words…” · “Fancy term. Simple idea.” · “Would your mom get this? No? Try again.”

He’s a mascot, not a real executive. The notes are real, the tiredness is method acting.

## How we stay honest

A free site still has to pay for itself somehow. Here’s exactly how this one works.

- **Free, with no strings:** No signup to read anything, no email wall, no course at the end, no “book a strategy call”.
- **Not an agency:** There’s nothing to sell you, so there’s no reason to make things sound harder than they are.
- **One ad, always labelled:** The only ad spot is the sticky note on the desk beside the page (on wide screens). Until someone pays, it promotes our own free tools. A paid note always says it’s paid and who paid, its link is marked as sponsored, and the DumbCMO writes his honest verdict underneath. Even when they’re paying.
- **Made-up numbers say so:** When a chart uses example numbers to show a shape, it’s labelled as made up.

## Every note works the same way

Same sections on every topic, so you always know where the simple answer lives.

1. **TL;DR:** The whole answer in three lines, on a sticky note at the top. Busy people can stop here.
2. **In normal-people words:** The plain explanation. No term goes undefined.
3. **The chai stall version:** The same idea told as an everyday story. The bit people remember and repeat.
4. **Do this today:** A tickable checklist. Small things that take under an hour.
5. **Not-so-frequently asked questions:** The questions people are scared to ask in meetings. Answered with zero judgement.
6. **Things your agency won’t say:** The honest bits. Smart, a little spicy, always true.
7. **Jargon Jail:** One term locked up per page, with its plain-English sentence.
8. **Red flags:** How to spot when someone is selling you nonsense.

## How to read the marks

He marks up every page like a notebook. Each mark means one thing, always.

- **highlighted:** The simple answer. Read only the yellow and you still get it.
- **mint:** Do this. Actions, checklists, next steps.
- **pink:** Watch out. Mistakes, traps and red flags.
- **jargon:** A fancy term. Hover or tap to see what it means.
- **marker:** The line worth remembering. One per section.
- **double:** Really, truly important. Use rarely.
- **$500:** The number that matters. Circle it.
- **synergy:** What agencies say. Crossed out, then translated.

## His faces

- **Smirk:** Default. He knows something you’re about to find out.
- **Eye roll:** Jargon, buzzwords, agency-speak.
- **Shock:** A number that should scare you. A scam you didn’t see coming.
- **Deadpan:** The boring truth. “Yes, it really is that simple.”
- **Fuming:** Somebody’s wasting your money. Bleeps live here.
- **Grin:** You did the thing. Small win, proper celebration.

## How he talks

- Plain words first. If a fancy term shows up, the plain meaning is right next to it.
- He swears, always bleeped: you’ll see “bullsh#t”, never the real thing.
- The swearing is aimed at jargon, scams and lazy agencies. Never at you.
- If something is boring but true, he says it’s boring. Most marketing is.

## What’s in the notebook

- [SEO, dumbed down](https://dumbcmo.com/seo): SEO is getting Google to show you when people search for what you sell. The clicks are free. The catch is time: think months, not days.
  - [Local SEO, dumbed down](https://dumbcmo.com/seo/local-seo): Local SEO is showing up when someone nearby searches for what you sell, like “bakery near me”. Most of it is your free Google Business Profile and your reviews.
  - [AEO and AI search, dumbed down](https://dumbcmo.com/seo/aeo): AEO is getting mentioned when people ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI instead of searching. It’s mostly SEO with a new name: clear answers, real reviews and a name people search for.
- [PPC and paid ads, dumbed down](https://dumbcmo.com/ppc): PPC means pay per click: you pay Google or Instagram each time someone clicks your ad. It’s fast, and it stops the second you stop paying.
  - [Google Ads, dumbed down](https://dumbcmo.com/ppc/google-ads): Google Ads put you at the top of Google when someone searches for what you sell. You pay per click, so the trick is paying only for searches from people ready to buy.
  - [Meta ads (Instagram and Facebook), dumbed down](https://dumbcmo.com/ppc/meta-ads): Meta ads show your stuff on Instagram and Facebook to people who weren’t looking but might want it. Meta’s automation does a lot of the work, and you’re still responsible for what it runs.
- [Social media, dumbed down](https://dumbcmo.com/social-media): Social media is showing up where your customers already scroll, often enough that they remember you. Followers are nice. Messages and sales are the point.
  - [Instagram for business, dumbed down](https://dumbcmo.com/social-media/instagram): Instagram is where people find you by scrolling. Post for the people who’d actually buy, and count messages and orders, not followers.
  - [WhatsApp for business, dumbed down](https://dumbcmo.com/social-media/whatsapp): WhatsApp is where your regulars already are. Use the free Business app, message only people who said yes, and send things they’d actually want.

## Reading this as a robot?

Every page has a plain markdown version: add .md to the address (the home page is /index.md). There’s also /llms.txt for a map of the site and /llms-full.txt for every note in one file.
